New Michael Boyle book: Advances in Functional Training

Training Techniques for Coaches, Personal Trainers and Athletes by Michael Boyle

In the seven years since the publication of his first book, Functional Training for Sports, new understanding of functional anatomy created a shift in strength coaching. With this new material, Coach Boyle presents the continued evolution of functional training as seen by a leader in the strength and conditioning field.

After an introduction into his new thinking, Michael uses ten basic sections to present everything a strength coach or personal trainer needs to understand modern training theory, beginning with his joint-by-joint approach to training, along with details of his use of Gray Cook and Lee Burton’s Functional Movement Screen. Next he discusses injury avoidance, treatment, rehab and training after injury. Then he updates the reader on the current thinking in core training, back pain, and on how the hip musculature works, and how it fails. We learn his philosophy on cardiovascular training, and see what has worked for the athletes training in his facility.

In the second half of the book, Michael shifts to training strategies, including which exercises he uses today and which he’s discarded, what equipment and tools are in use on his gym floor, how he develops speed, and, of course, there’s a large section on his now-famous single-leg training. Finally, we get to program design, where he puts the entire package together to mesh theory with daily reality. He’ll teach you the basic objectives of a sound program, and then over the course of 32 pages, he’ll show you exactly which programs he uses in a variety of client and athletic circumstances.

    Do you plan on having an e-book created of this?

    Daniel, I hadn’t thought about it, actually. It doesn’t seem like the type of book that works well as an ebook. I take it you disagree?

    In 5-10 years, almost all books will be digital. Went I got my masters 2 years ago, all the text books were digital. It’s the way things are going…Still, I like having something tangible in my hands when I read. Reading Atlas Shrugged on a computer monitor doesn’t quite do it…

    Edit: As to the quick future of digital books, I fully agree. I didn’t realize text books were digital, though. I think I should probably get a Kindle so I can understand note taking on an ebook reader — that’s my main stumbling block on the idea of reading this kind of book electronically. The second hold-up for me as a reader and as a publisher is the desire to wait until the digital format war is won and everyone is using the same format.

    PS: Jim, excellent progress. 49 pounds is terrific! I’ll stick your site in my feed reader.

    I like this article. Great tips. I like to incorporate kettlebells into my workouts too. Really good for functional fitness.

    Is this avaliable to purchase in the UK – I am a massive Boyle fan and i cant find it anywhere! – Cheers

    Two options, Ben. First is to order from us; we ship the next day, freight is $12.95 and the book will arrive in 7-10 days. Second option is Amazon.com. I’m not sure how long it takes to filter from Amazon US to other countries, but Amazon US will have these shortly. I believe they have stock arriving from our distributor now, but with the pre-orders, those are already taken. I’m not sure how long it will take for this to sort out and become regular “in stock” at Amazon.

    Amazon.ca and Chapters.ca both have Advances in Functional Training via some mercenary merchants who are charging $85 and $97 respectively for the book. Buying direct adds about 30-60% to the cost of the book because of international shipping rates. What’s a guy to do? N/A from Human Kinetics.
    Hope the feedback is helpful. A group of us wanted to order four copies.

    Sorry for the trouble — the only way I know to help is that we do ship internationally. That book ships well in a flat-rate package, $13.45 for the shipping. I don’t know how to get it listed at international Amazon stores, however we do sell it via Amazon US, and they ship internationally for about $13.

    Human Kinetics won’t be able to help with this one since they didn’t publish it.
