RIP Davy Jones, 2/29/2012
I think by now you’ve heard that Monkees star Davy Jones died earlier today. This seems like a good day for a Monkees review — did you know Dave was on the show?

I remember reading an article on here where Dave described his experience on The Monkees. The script called for Dave to call Davy “shorty” or “skinny” or something to that effect and Dave mistakenly used the term “shrimp”. Davy got pissed and made a big deal about it so Dave (being the bigger man both figuratively AND literally) apologized to Davy. But Davy, at 5′ 3″ and probably 125 pounds WAS a shrimp . . . especially compared to Dave . . . and especially in 1967!

Yes, there was something like that. One of the words may have been “shrimp,” the other was “twerp.” I was thinking pip-squeek instead of shrimp. It was apparently a show-stopper for about 20 minutes while Dave stood aside with no clue what he’d done wrong.

Dave Draper played Bulk in Episode No. 38 of The Monkees, “I Was A 99-lb. Weakling” (a.k.a. “Physical Culture”) (prod. #4757, aired on NBC October 16, 1967 and April 29, 1968). It was the very first episode of The Monkees I ever saw, on that fateful Pleasant Valley Sunday, February 22, 1986, during that marathon on MTV.

Dave, certanly you were a super inspiration on those years (and now). That was one of my favorites shows and, by surprise , you show up on that episode…what a night..if I just had a recorder (of any kind). jaja. You are great Dave.
