I don’t know what to do with all my spare time and money these days. I could go into home construction, drill for oil, develop a windmill, solar-panel manufacturing plant, run for president, czar or dog-catcher or, perhaps, open a chain of flourishing gyms. Farming has always fascinated me; I could grow ethanol or raise range-fed puppies for homeless children.

Retirement offers lots of opportunity for the bright and entrepreneurial. Of course, I’ll need help. Can you say... Laree? She can take notes, run errands and make coffee.

On second thought, I think I’ll stick to writing and working out. Neither deed accomplishes anything, but they’re cheap and handy, innocuous and time-wasting. Additionally, Laree is free to attend her trivial pursuits -- producing, editing and publishing books and DVDs, internetting, web-building, moderating; shopping, laundering, housecleaning, cooking and changing the oil.

Phew… that was a close call. Now that my aspirations are in check and life is back to normal, I think I’ll compose this week’s newsletter.

A sensitive undertaking, one of my chief responsibilities is to control the tenor -- the pace and mood -- of the IronOnline weekly. It’s primary readership, B-40s, B-50s and B-60s, though sturdy and well-crafted, are not what they used to be.

The restraining factors I must consider: Too much information can confuse, excessive excitement can exhaust and sudden and abundant instruction can overwhelm; brave new ideas invariably cause heart palpitations, breathtaking inspiration often provokes lightheadedness and startling advances in exercise style and execution have been known to generate bewilderment.

Thus, I keep it simple. I reserve my most recent and spectacular developments in nutrition and muscle performance for quantifiable practice, and present only the basics for the seasoned IOL vanguard: Train sensibly, eat smart, rest sufficiently, relax lots, be strong, twinkle and smile from within.

How can I expect you to accept or respond to the Bomber one-set, one-rep, one-exercise, one-day a week per muscle group XLFST Workout? Seriously. You’re not ready and it’s too late. Similarly, most of you would reject the DD water-only plus ID-DNA Protein-Breath Absorption Diet. Progress is a thug.

So, slick slac, what are we left with? Plenty: an assortment of barbells and dumbbells, pulleys and machines. Oh, and a large selection of good food and a hammock under a tree. Life is but a dream…

I’m heading for the gym, with you or without you. Part of me says, “Oh, no, not again, not that, not the iron, and the pushing, the pulling, the pumping and the pain,” while the other part of me says, “Oh, gee, really -- the sets and reps and muscle and stress and strain; the time, the devotion, the sacrifice, the discipline and refrain?”

The gym, as we 21st century movers and shakers like to say, is where it is at, the cutting-edge environment for the driven, inspired and aspiring; lifting weights is the win-win sport of stars, champions and beautiful people. Hop on a treadmill, mount a bike, climb aboard a stair-climber and realize your dreams. Dreams do come true at the gym. Dream on…

Someone sent me an email last week, a 64-year-old fellow who recently discovered davedraper.com (he said it was like coming upon a lovely island in a lone South Pacific archipelago, rugged, wonderful and calming), and suggested I include information for seniors. He was just getting back into exercise and didn’t know what to do. Humph, I thought, what I wouldn’t give to be 64 again, the bum.

Then, I thought, for the past few years davedraper.com went from a Bomber stronghold to a grab-anything-you-can-and-hold-on-tight meeting place for Golden Era blasters. I wouldn’t dare advise an aging citizen who has not lifted weights before how to lift weights now. Oh, the responsibility, the liability, the incredulity; besides, what do I know? I stumbled into this racket almost 60 years ago when I was kid.

Seriously, I followed my nose then, as I follow my nose today, and as you know everyone’s nose is different. I’d have to do research to learn the proper and politically correct way to train the new old trainee… or is it the old, new trainee? See what I mean?

My roll on this bus is to keep air in the tires, fuel in the tank and everyone on board comfortable and cheery, as I steer us to the gym for another slug at the iron.

Honk, honk… Outta the way, Buster, we’re comin’ through.

I have an idea, Sir. Hire a trustworthy, licensed and insured, well-built trainer for three training sessions. If both of you are worthy of the task, three sessions is sufficient. Have a blast. Catch the bus next week.

I saved a little space for the Big News. The larger-than-life project, da monsta, is complete. Dan John’s three-DVD Trifecta (video, audio and ebook) is ready for order and delivery as of July 5th. You will be impressed, you will be happy, you will be smart; you will learn and be able to teach. Read Laree’s scintillating wrap-up and visit the suggested links to get a glimpse of Dan at work.

Did I just say July 5th, like, the day after July 4th? What happened to June? Wait! Hold on a sec! I just got here… what’s the rush?

Dan John rules…

Godspeed… David The Gladiator

Everyone has heard of the light at the end of the tunnel, but few have experienced it… or know anyone who has. Lo and behold, Laree D has, and it is neither daylight nor the headlight of an oncoming train. It is the 3.5 hour, three-disc DVD series by Dan John called Intervention: Course Corrections for the Athlete and Trainer.

Three months ago Dan John gave an in-depth seminar about the fundamentals and intricacies of correct training structure for the focused athlete. Cameras rolled as he described, demonstrated and detailed on blackboards the functional movement systems and their achievement. In the ensuing months, Laree edited the raw material, arranged it for clear understanding and added files of related information to present a bright light to which few tunnels lead.

Here’s a quick look: Dan John -- Intervention.
