Laree has been working on an elaborate project for Perform Better, an association of the USA’s top conditioning coaches and training experts, people like Gray Cook, Dan John, Thom Plummer and Mike Boyle, who know best how the athletic body functions, how to achieve the most from it, how to keep it going strong, and how to fix it when it’s out of order.

Go figure. Some people have nothing better to do.

This group of 26 scholarly athletes, including ladies of the female gender (go team), convened late August in Long Beach for a three-day Perform Better Summit to present their know-how and understanding to trainers with a thirst for information and knowledge. The subject matter ranged from strength to speed, sports nutrition to fat loss, core programming to thoracic spine mobility, coaching success secrets to the future of the fitness industry.

I offered my seminar and mini-demonstrations on nick-free hair removal, instant tanning and lustrous body oiling; how to choose the proper cut and color of posing trunks, correct stage lighting and, my specialty, dramatic posing to your favorite musical mix, including Joan Baez, rap, Sinatra, reggae and Kate Smith. They regretted to inform me they were booked solid, “maybe next time, Doctor Drapeless.”

The Summit was a vivid success. Everyone, the instructors and the instructed, the coaches and the coached, emerged energized, educated and entertained. The collected wisdom, the evolved techniques, the injury prevention and repair MOs, the inspiration and enlightenment, spreads worldwide today by those sports and conditioning enthusiasts and personal trainers who listened and learned and grew.

Here’s the best part: This is just the beginning. Yes, Tommy, there’s more. Each of the 26 lectures, approximately 75 minutes in length, has been professionally recorded (hello, Laree) and is now magically contained on its very own CD for your enrichment. The material is at the replicator now and will be available for shipping just after Thanksgiving.

Egad! This is beginning to sound a lot like a commercial. “Buy your CD now and get a free puppy.”  “Buy a puppy, get a free CD.”  “All profits go to the Happy Little Bombers Fund of America.”  “Swell Christmas gift idea for the entire family.”

The 26-CD Summit Pack is serious yet friendly listening and learning for anyone with a mind for strength and health, fitness and conditioning, athletics and sport performance, musclebuilding and weight lifting... and physical therapy and personal training. These teachers, educators, instructors, athletes and coaches love their areas of expertise and delight in sharing it. They’re bright, tuned, practiced, enthusiastic, authentic and creative. They speak to you, here and now. You understand what they say, and why. And you’re better for having paused and listened.

Learning is a joy.

And now a word from our sponsor, Bomber Blend Puppy Chow.

“Woof… woof woof…

Just kidding! We don’t have Bomber Blend Puppy Chow. However, we do stock Bomber Blend Gorilla Gulp, the greatest muscle-building protein powder in the entire world, probably the Universe, since the Iron Age, though studies are incomplete. They’re tied up in Congress along with the jobs bill. Trust me.

Not even a little bit funny… sales of BB have just plummeted… see ya at the “Occupy” protest on Main, man.

Better yet, meet me at the Weight Room later this afternoon, where I shall simultaneously seek and discover, uncover and display my latest attack on mature (old, wrinkled and shrinking) biceps and triceps, as they attempt to slip away in the cover of night… the faithless little twits.

We all get it, but most of us are slow to accept it. The muscles we worked hard for -- nay, slaved over, sacrificed for and flogged ourselves in pursuit of -- weaken and fade away with time. Gasp! The splendid and adored slabs, though boring and exasperating, depend on sensible exercise to endure and perform healthfully as we shrink, vanish and otherwise disintegrate before our blurring eyes. So, buck up, suckers, cuz it’s goin’ fast.

Just kidding! No, I’m not. He is too!

Thus, knowing my energy, recuperative abilities and workout time are limited, I’ve decided to make a concerted effort to maximize the retention and restoration of my once-blazing guns. Where there’s a will, and Gorilla Gulp, humiliation and 75 minutes of relentless ruthlessness under the iron, there’s a way.

In the recent months, arm work has been reduced to whatever the bis and tris can grab while working shoulders, back and chest. All that pushing and pulling have to be good for something, so push, pull and shut up. Muscle has memory and my arms are smart. Not. They forgot everything I taught them over the years, the skinny, dim-witted little twits.

From now on this is what I’m going to do to gain their attention and reverse the course of history yet to take place. Bombers can do that sort of thing.

Standing bent-bar curls supersetted with seated, overhead two-hand, single-dumbbell triceps extensions with back support: 4 sets x 6 - 8 reps and 10 - 12 reps.

Seated dumbbell alternate curls supersetted with multi-directional pulley pushdowns: 4 x 6 - 8 reps and 15 – 20 reps

Barbell wrist curls SS with machine dips and dumbbell reverse curls: 3 sets x 10 – 12 reps

I’m doing this routine -- a Muscle Beach original that has followed me from the Dungeon to Gold’s to the Santa Cruz World Gym over, say, 50 years -- until I burst or I tear the biceps and triceps from their bones, whichever comes first. Or until the gorillas come home, or the Jobs Bill passes, or the Occupiers go to Greece, or shale oil is piped from Canada.

The 25-set blast is dedicated to the bis, tris and forearms, but when full range of motion is applied in every movement, body rhythm and persuasive thrust, more than ordinary things happen. The core and midsection, the back and pecs, the shoulders and traps join forces to make the endeavor complete. The body functions as an entire unit, and delights and responds to cooperation, support and teamwork.

A body that trains and plays together remains and stays together.

Now get out there, team; eat some yams and turkey. And be thankful. We’ve got a life to live, a game to win and a world to save.

God Bless us… Coach Bo Boom
