What Success can I Hope for in a Ketogenic Diet?

The following are bits and pieces of a few weeks of low carb dieting thoughts for your consideration.

<What is the minimum amount of time before you see some real results? And if this not going to be a long term or lifetime die, thow do approach feared carb overload when coming off diet?>

Results are virtually immediate. In my intitial 2 weeks I dropped 17 pounds. I'm on my 170th day of keto - low carb eating and have lost 68 pounds. I fit into an old pair of 38" Levi's yesterday. A long way from the 52" that I was wearing when I started.

As to it being a long term or lifetime diet - WHY NOT? I feel SO good and enjoy what I'm eating so much that I have no intention of stopping eating this way. When my weight gets were I want I will continue to maintain my protein intake, take in a bit more fat and a LOT more fruit. May occasionally eat potatos, oatmeal, brown rice and dessert. But I intend on continuing to mostly avoid sugar and things made of refined flour - especially pasta. If you start eating this way I wish you the best of luck. It's the most effortless way to loose weight I've ever seen.

The only thing I would caution you about is that your natural tendency will be to eat too little. The keto diet, in addition to sparing lean body mass, suppresses your appetite. Taking two tablespoons of flax oil a day adds 240 calories to your diet and makes it easier to get sufficient calories such that your metabolism doesn't tank on you. Chuck

I don't know about others, but on this keto or "right above keto" diet I'm on, since I still take in around 60 carbs a day, I am losing fat like there's no tomorrow, in 12 days I dropped .61%. For me that's really good, since I was shooting for .2% or higher per week. Guess it's starting to kick into high gear. I've also been making muscle gains! Woohoo! -Joe O.

We're enjoying a variety of foods that we haven't had in years, but it's more difficult to shop and prepare. The kitchen duties take more effort and time, which is mostly sort of cool, but could be viewed as a downside.

I didn't get my bodyfat tested before I started - mostly because I've had it done a couple of times; once it was way too high, the other time way too low. Neither were figures that either Dave or I thought were the slightest bit reliable, so I didn't want to use this as a measure. I should have done tape measurements I suppose, but even then, if you gain a slight bit in the arms, let's say, how do you recognize that you've lost fat? Instead, I used the scale - another dim move. Lost 4 pounds the first week (water), gained 3 back over the course of this month (water? fat? muscle???). I feel good, my clothes fit good, I'm stronger than ever. Very happy with it. Laree
