QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF

That portion of the globe known as America is in the middle of its summer season. The mainland and the external states of Hawaii and Alaska are mostly hot as I write this note, Wednesday, August 2nd. Now, I like hot as long as it's dry and not over ninety; these conditions not satisfied and I wilt. I'm easy to please, providing my choices are somewhere between terrific and very good. We clocked ninety-one at the gym this week and I started asking myself some questions. Gave me something to do while wilting on the front deck under the towering redwood tree.

Questions to ask yourself on this August day in the middle of the summer:

Am I eating?

It's hot. Are you eating enough protein? Carbs are often the foods of choice during the summer season, especially when it's super-warm. No one should ingest less than 100 protein grams a day. We want muscle. Popular summer barbeques and picnics offer an abundance of food. Are you stuffing yourself? We don't want fat.

Am I drinking?

Are you drinking more than enough water? I forget and pay for it in listlessness and loss of precious bodyweight. Therefore, I suspect you are too and need to be reminded. Drink more refreshing, pure water - more often. We want energy. The same barbeques and picnics mentioned above offer a wide selection of beverages. Is your beer and alcohol intake well gauged? (Am I being a pest?)

Am I training?

My workout today looked like a mirage from the underside of my sweaty eyelids. Perhaps it would disappear like an illusion and I could take a cold shower and go back out to the deck and sit in the shade. Drink me some ice-cold refreshing water.

This is not fantasyland and we are not weaklings whose discipline melts like ice cream. We are bombers: solid, bold and mighty. We don't want gaps. How are your workouts registering in the scale of 1 to 10, zero being big-time bad? What are you willing to accept under the somewhat limiting conditions of the summer? Today I had a five and was griping. In the locker room I repeated the clich, as if I just conceived it, "Better than no workout at all." I was alone.

Fives are fine as long as you get some eights and nines occasionally. Threes are understandable but anything below needs an explanation, and it better be good.

Am I resting?

Or, am I resting too much? This indicates lazy or slovenly, even. Yuk. Lazy is for the enemy. I have a buddy who approaches evaporation in the middle of August as he surfs and hangs the beaches as if the water, sun and sand might dematerialize while he went home and ate or slept or hit the gym. Stays lean. Finally got him on the Bomber Blend and he gained thirty pounds in thirty days. He's ripped and the girls all love him and he's going to Hollywood to be a star. Probably the glutamine.

Remember, the longer days with more activities can be distracting. Don't neglect yourself. Burn the candle at both ends and you're playing with fire and wasting wax. Eat, drink, workout, rest and play. We forget anything important? Be nice to people, shut the door behind you, don't clang the dumbbells, put your weights away...

Laree said, "Write anything. Nobody'll read anyway. It's summertime."

Bombers Up.
