Henrik Supplies "Draper Training, 1970"

Heres a little inspiration for the hardcore Draper fans. Its from an old Muscle Builder magazine and in the words of Dick Tyler and Art Zeller we follow Dave in his training for the 1970 Mr. World title. They both observed Daves training in Golds Gym in the month of August 1970.

Dick Tyler: The men started to assemble in the cool of the evening. First there was Frank Zane. He quietly nodded to Zabo Koszewski who was sitting behind the desk and went upstairs to the dressing room. Soon Franco Columbo and the current IFBB Mr. Belgium Serge Jacobs, arrived. Dave Draper was next, followed by Ed Giuliani and Mike Katz. After a few minutes Don Peters came and within seconds Arnold Schwarzenegger arrived. Golds Gym was now busting with championship lumps. Already at work was Ken Waller who is one of the most massive bodybuilders of all time. The cannon was loaded and was ready to explode.

All this concentration of bodybuilders was for the sole purpose of the getting ready for the big contests in New York. With the exception of Waller all the others were IFBB bodybuilders and were stomping like mad bulls for the tension of the big event. Already Zane and Jacobs were working abs. This would last for as long as an hour and a half without rest. Arnold and Draper went over to the squat rack in the corner. They started loading the bar which was already bent from the tons of weight it had been forced to carry over the years.

What made the whole scene a little scary was the almost unearthly quiet that seemed to descend. Everyone was concentrating on what they where doing. This was serious business and there would be no useless rapping this night.

I looked over at Arnold who was heavily clothed in a sweatsuit. The stains of sweat began to show under the arms and around the chest. Dave slapped more plates on the bar. Now it was his turn. Again and again he went down to the full squat position only to fight to stand. Arnold leaned forward with each rep and counted them out. When it seemed that Dave would burst if he made one more effort, the Oak would lean even closer to the Bomber and say, You can do it, Dave. You can do it. Then as if in some kind of hypnotic state the mighty Draper thighs would ram out another rep. Do another one, Dave. said Arnold softly and another rep was done. Then it was Arnold's turn and he would work until his thighs looked like they would split the pants.

There were no resting between the supersets and both Dave and Arnold started doing sissy squat moves on the Hack machine.

All that could be heard was the clank of Olympic plates and an occasional yell of encouragement.

Arnold later explained: On Monday its torture routine number one. Thats the heavy day. On Wednesday its torture routine number two when we combine the heavy with the supersets and on Friday we do nothing but supersets for the legs. On Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday its the same thing for the upper body.

Art Zeller: ..Theres Dave Draper in the corner, his blond mane kept out of his eyes by a headband. I sneak up behind a dumbbell rack and begin firing away. Wow! The concentration on the guys face is incredible. He pays no attention to what I am doing. Then I notice his eyes are tightly closed as the barbell goes up and down behind his neck. The sweat drips from his leonine head as he works on his deltoids. He finishes the set, drops the bar into a rack and grasps both deltoids, screaming painfully. But I know this is a welcome pain, the pain that tells the trainee hes getting there! Without even a seconds pause, he takes a pair of fortyfive pound dumbbells for standing laterels..

There is some great Art Zeller pictures with the articles, some of which is hanging on the walls of Daves gym in Santa Cruz.
