Wild Bill at Hennessey's Tavern

Dana Point, California. August 20, 1999.

--- A spokesperson for the popular local Dana Point pub, restaurant, and watering hole, "Hennessey's Tavern" today denied rumors of impending financial doom as a result of one of its larger patrons ordering club soda with a twist of lime instead of his usual "multiple" Fosters Lagers on tap and "Irish Nachos" with his large weighlifting buddies as a part of their regular Friday post-training "routine." "Yeah, their bill was a whole lot smaller today.

I heard one of them say something about some goofy bodybuilder from Santa Cruz - a Mr. World or something from a long time ago named Draper or Drupper or something - getting one of our big guys all jacked up thinking he could look like a real bodybuilder. Huh, what a joke. I think the whole thing's silly. We have better surfers down here, too. Santa Cruz. Humph. What do they know? A bunch of old hippies up there. I've seen this lots of times before, and it never lasts. Besides, we have plenty of customers where he came from Hey man, you wanna try some of our cheesecake? It's world famous. It'll really stick to your ribs, buddy. Hey, where you goin' ...???"

It's true friends. I sat there. Two club sodas. Lime twist. Nothing else. *Nothing.* Hennesseys. Friday. What the heck is this world coming to?? Man, did those Fosters look good. Big and Tall. And, I was really tired from the workout. Condensation running down the side of Rick's (one of my training partners) glass. And, after all, it *is* a tradition with us.

But, five minutes previously, I had been a block away alone in the locker room at the gym changing, as I was also the last one to finish up my workout. Major shoulder and arm pump. Check posing in the mirror under the perfect lighting and with this huge pump. Don't *even* try to tell me you don't do that. Looking very, very thick. No tape, but the arms were definitely pushing 19. Big peaks. Anyway, the veins were starting to show across the delts which shot out, up and away from the arms. Traps are going straight up off the clavicle. More veins running down the fully rounded left bicep through the forearm in a front arm shot flexed across the waist with the right up in a single bicep pose. Turn and down to a right side triceps pose showing lots of separation as it explodes away from my elbow. Pull the shorts up slightly and see the line running up the quad in full flex. Hit the chest and stiations pop along the upper pec, which is split from the lower. Yeah, they've been there before, but not really showing clarity of groups like this since I was in my mid 20's.

Surely, it didn't all happen this week, and I still have much work to do, but I swear this diet is already working. I can see it right in front of my eyes. So off to the big H and club soda. Meanwhile, I'm thinking about all of you guys, as I hear and endure the ribbing about my choice of beverage. I give it right back regarding their beers and lack of abs. Then to Denny's. Ground sirloin, mushrooms, cottage cheese, tomatoes. The roll and butter looked good, but it sat there. No way, Jose. The thing is: once you get this far, it's easy staying with it. Everyone in your life is now on notice. Turning back makes you look like a quitter. Uh-uh. Don't like going there. Not my style. I'm not going to be the first one. If nobody was looking, who would know. But they are. You are. Besides, Laree has that stick ... I don't even want to think about answering to Dave. Makes me shudder, and I don't scare that easily. Hennessey's will survive quite nicely without me.
